This is a tale of a defecive Turbo. I had a customer with a VW TDI that with a blown up turbo. In efforts of reduce the costs associated or replacing such a part he went out and purhcased a refubished rebuilt element from a fairly known provider on-line. At a first glance after the initial set-up I noticed the low quality of the part - part of the top of loss and overall the part looked like a poorly made asian knock off.
The prophecy was correct! first drive after install and the engine exhibited un controlled run offs - luckily the car was standard and I was able to drive it slowly back to the shop. After initial inspection and taking the part off (a process which took quite a while - as you may know installing a TDI turbo is NOT a simple two step process) showed the part of leaking oil with a busted internals.
Moral of the story and once again there is no surprise here! You get what you pay for. The part costing less than half of the original OEM (after returning the defective one to the supplier) ended up costing more than double in time spend as well as labor. Please consider that next time when ordering "bargain" parts online. Saving a few bucks may end up costing quite a bit in more in the end.
I have attached a photos of the actual part with the oil leakage. I really do hope the customer can return the part and receive his money back. They will not be buying questionable after market parts again...
