a tale of a VW key fob
Posted by admin on March 04, 2011
I received a frantic call from a a customer yesterday morning asking me about what to do when losing the key to his VW - since they were 3 hours away from home and have misplaced their key while staying at a hotel over night:
Very unforuntnate situations - since they keys are also tied to the vehicle alarm system and therefore we are not talking about a simple matter here (is there anything simple with German Engineering?) - calling the dealership I was told it takes a couple of days to replicate a key using the VIN number but then you have to get the car to an authorized dealership to get it programmed for the vehicle. Non of which helped the poor guy stuck 200 miles away from home.
He later messaged me saying the key was found by the hotel staff to be wedged in the desk drawer. The moral of the story: DO NOT LOSE YOUR KEY FOB!
I thought this would be a good time to point to useful resources:
1) a site that shows how to replace the batter on a VW key
2) quite extensive discussion over the key fobs to whom ever wants to read through:
Good driving!
